All puppies are the best, but Marmot is described by her fosters as the ‘bestest’. She is curious and confident, while very mindful of boundaries and negative reactions – both from other dogs or humans.
Marmot can easily be redirected and is very happy if she gets things right, so positive reinforcement works wonders with her. She is easily scared by fast movements and loud noises at home so gentle corrections only are a must. House-training is coming along well, with only a few accidents here and there. Like all puppies, Marmot also needs to be occasionally re-directed to appropriate chew toys.
She has medium energy and if one day is full of exciting things, she’s very happy to just chill and mostly sleep the next day or two.
Marmot prefers her food to be a challenge: rather than just having a bowl of kibble, she likes quizzes, magic balls or nose work to find her food. While she is generally food driven and can be easily guided with a treat, she might be one of those rare dogs that eat like cats: eating a bit when hungry, leaving the rest in the bowl for a small snack later.
Marmot loves to play with other dogs – the bigger, the better – and is all in, but a small growl is enough for her to be on her back on give the other dog some space.
She loves to snuggle with her humans, especially in the morning after the first walk – or any other time you’re close. She’ll just walk up to you drop on her back and wags her tail until you’re down on the floor with her to pet her. She doesn’t have separation anxiety but also doesn’t approve of closed doors and is one of those pups that happily accompanies you to the washroom to lie between your feet.
Marmot is up for anything fun and is very trusting. She easily went on a road trip around Ottawa, on a small hike, into a dog carrier backpack and went on a short bicycle ride to see Shakespeare in the park. She initially was scared of city noise but lost any fear quickly and has no issue with anything happening on the street while walking.
Like most puppies, Marmot can get a bit over-excited when she’s tired. A short time in the crate helps as a gentle re-set. Marmot is very friendly to everyone and everything. She already has made lots of good dog-friends and all the humans in the neighbourhood love her.
