Hi, I’m Dodger!
I’m a very sweet and expressive boy with a goofy personality. My favourite thing in the world might just be belly rubs. When I get them, which is not near enough in my view, I roll onto my back, stick my ridiculously long tongue out and make the funniest little grunting noises.
I’m a velcro dog. I love my people and want to be wherever they are. If you adopt me, expect lots of excited boops and kisses when you get home, followed by me enthusiastically leaning my entire body into you, because pets are required.
I’m very food motivated too. If I hear you eating or smell something delicious, I’ll probably come over to investigate. Strictly for quality-control purposes, of course.
I’m also a big fan of sniffing on walks! I enjoy slow strolls around the neighbourhood, stopping to investigate every interesting smell along the way. Flowers? Day old poop? No matter. Both are absolutely worth checking out. I’ll even loudly sniff people as I walk past because you never know when you might meet an old friend or make a new one!
I am visually impaired, so I need a little extra guidance when I’m out and about, but I’m actually a beautiful leash walker. I rarely pull (unless there’s a sniff that just can’t wait), and I’ve learned commands like “step up,” “step down” and “turn” to help me navigate. My seeing-eye human uses both a harness and collar leash to help guide me safely.
One thing I’m working on is being alone, especially for longer periods. Sometimes when my people leave, I’m convinced they’ve gone somewhere super fun without me, so I bark to see if they’ll come back for me. Other times, I just take a nap. Sometimes I do both — on repeat.
With patience and consistent positive training, I’m sure I can get more comfortable being alone. I’m also working on getting used to my crate and x-pen. In the meantime, my humans need to make sure my area is dog-proofed so I stay safe and don’t get into any unauthorized redecorating projects.
When we’re together though? I’m pretty much the perfect gentleman. I’m happiest simply hanging out, getting affection, sniffing around, asking for snacks and enjoying life.
My dream home would be with someone who has plenty of time to spend with me and the patience and desire to help a visually impaired dog experience the world through all my other amazing senses.
I need eye drops regularly, and I currently have some dental issues that will be addressed soon by the rescue’s veterinarian. Other than that, all this affectionate goof needs is a forever home where he can soak up the love throughout his senior years.
